Born December 1, 1952, The Honourable Desmond Anthony Augustus McKenzie was Mayor of Kingston from July 2003 to January 2012; the youngest person to have ever become Mayor of the city of Kingston, which is the largest English speaking Capital City in the Caribbean.
Minister McKenzie is revered as the most active Mayor to serve the City of Kingston and its environs, even though his passion for service and his strong desire to rid the City of illegal activities were often misconstrued. There is no denying that his methods have borne some positive results.
Minister McKenzie has served in the capacity as Councillor for the Denham Town Division (1977 to 1984) and the Tivoli Gardens Division (1990 to 2011). In the 2011 general elections he was elected as Member of Parliament for the Kingston Western Division. He was also a member of the Jamaican Senate between 2002 and 2003 and was the then Opposition’s Deputy Spokesman on Local Government, Youth, Community Development and Sports during that period.
He is a former President of the Jamaica Labour Party’s youth arm, Young Jamaica, and was Jamaica’s representative on the Caribbean and the International Youth Council. His hard work, dedication was not to have gone unnoticed as he was awarded CVM Television’s Newsmaker of the Year and Rotary International’s Paul Harris Award, in 2004.
Minister McKenzie is married with three sons and two daughters. He is a lover of good music, and as such, when he is not busy serving the people he is collecting, selecting and playing music. He is also an avid sports fan, but especially, a lover of cricket.
